⚡ 2-SECOND IDENTIFICATION METHOD

STEP 1: Check Punctuation (1 second)

  • ? = INTERROGATIVE (100% guaranteed)

STEP 2: Check Beginning (1 second)

  • WH-words (What, Where, When, Why, How) = INTERROGATIVE
  • Auxiliary verbs (Are, Do, Can, Will) = INTERROGATIVE
  • Verb/Please/Don’t = IMPERATIVE
  • Statement = ASSERTIVE

Rule: If adding “You” makes sense, it’s IMPERATIVE!

TRAP 1: “How could you do this!”

  • Looks like: Interrogative (starts with “How”)
  • Actually: Exclamatory (ends with !)
  • Rule: Punctuation wins over starting words

TRAP 2: “You should study hard.”

  • Looks like: Imperative (seems like advice)
  • Actually: Assertive (statement about what you should do)
  • Rule: No direct command = Not imperative
